Cosmetic packaging printer, Dublin, Ireland
Twenty-four shades that have to agree.
Cartons, sleeves and gift sets for skincare, colour cosmetics and fragrance, printed in Dublin. Small panels, heavy finishing, and ingredient copy that still has to be legible at six point.
Beauty is bought with the eyes, and for most of the decision the carton is the product. Nobody can smell the fragrance or feel the cream through the box. What they can do is pick it up, and everything they conclude about what is inside comes from how the outside is printed and finished.
Shade ranges are where the colour discipline earns its place. A foundation in twenty-four shades is twenty-four cartons that have to relate to each other, sit in order on a fixture, and still look right beside a tester of the product itself. Judging that by eye across a run, on board that may come from different mill batches, is how a range drifts into looking like several ranges. We measure it instead, agree the tolerance in advance, and check it during the run rather than after it.
The finishing is where the price is carried. Foil, emboss, soft-touch lamination and spot varnish all have to register to the print rather than near it, and beauty cartons are small, so a fraction of a millimetre that would pass on a cereal box is visible here. Doing the finishing in the same building as the printing is what keeps that tight, and what keeps the lead time honest.
Two things are quietly redrawing the structures underneath all of it. Ingredient and safety copy keeps growing while panels stay the same size, so legibility at small point sizes is now a design constraint rather than a detail. And the move to refills and mono-material, fibre-based secondary packaging is changing formats that had not moved in twenty years.
Work
A range reads as a range or it does not.
One brand across skincare, colour and fragrance. Different substrates, different finishes, different print dates, and the customer expects them to look like a set.
