Foodservice packaging printer, Dublin, Ireland
Judged after it arrives, not on a shelf.
Takeaway, delivery and catering packaging, printed in Dublin. Cartons, clamshells, cups and sleeves that have to hold hot food, survive twenty minutes in a delivery bag, and still look like the brand when the lid comes off.
Retail packaging gets looked at under good light while the customer decides. Foodservice packaging gets looked at once, at a kitchen table, after a journey. By then it has been filled hot, stacked, put in an insulated bag, driven across a city and carried up a flight of stairs. Whatever it looks like at that moment is what the brand looks like.
Most of the difficulty is board and barrier. Grease resistance and recyclability pull against each other, and the honest answer depends on what is going in the box: a dressed salad, a burger with a wet relish and a portion of chips are three different problems. We would rather specify against the actual menu than against a general idea of takeaway food.
Structure decides the rest. A box has to stack without crushing what is under it, vent enough that a hot lid does not steam the print soft, open one-handed, and nest flat in a kitchen with no storage. Those are drawing decisions, and they are cheap while the pack is still a drawing.
Volumes here run differently to retail. An independent opening a second site might need two thousand boxes, not fifty thousand, and will reorder in small quantities for years. Holding the same colour across those repeats is the whole job, and it is why the colour standard is set once and kept rather than matched afresh each run.
Work
Same brand, hot and cold.
A foodservice range spans board weights, coatings and formats that never sit beside each other on a shelf, but do sit beside each other on a table.
