Step 05 of 09
Invisible when it works. Catastrophic when it doesn't.
Separations, trapping, impositions and plates. Quietly where most jobs are won or lost.
Prepress is invisible when it goes well and catastrophic when it does not. It is where a spot colour becomes four-colour by accident, where a trap opens a white line along an edge, and where an imposition wastes a quarter of every sheet.
We do it in-house, which means the people preparing the file can walk to the press and ask. Separations are checked rather than assumed. Trapping is set for the stock and the press it is going on, not left at a default. Impositions are worked out against the actual sheet size so you are not paying to print air.
You get a proof that means something, produced under controlled lighting to the profile agreed in colour management, so what you sign off is what comes off the press.
If your file arrives with problems, you get told what they are and what we propose to do about them. Files are not quietly fixed and returned as though nothing happened, because the same problem then arrives again on the next job.
Native files, PDFs and packaged artwork are all fine.

Finished artwork, a sketch on the back of a spec sheet, or just a deadline you're worried about. All of them are a fine place to start.
